Cinematic 3D Text Reveal

The travel-reel effect that looks like a Hollywood budget. Bold location text appears to rise from behind you as you lift your arms — sandwiched between you and the sky.

What it does

The "sandwich" effect,
step by step.

Text sits behind you but in front of the sky — that's the whole magic. You shoot ultra-wide with a tripod, duplicate the clip, chroma-key the sky out of the back layer, drop your text layer between the two, then keyframe it so it rises in sync with your arms. Four phases. CapCut Mobile or Desktop. Zero plugins. Below is the full breakdown of Matt's exact workflow.

The Workflow

Four phases working
in perfect sync.

01Phase 1 · The Shoot

The secret to this effect isn't just the editing — it's how you film it.

Step 1 — Stability is Key

Use a tripod. Even a slight wobble can break the 3D illusion.

Step 2 — Wide Angle Lens

Use your phone's 0.5x (Ultra-Wide) lens — 0.7x also works. This gives more "sky real estate" for the text to rise into.

Step 3 — The Arm Lift Movement

Stand with your back to camera, arms down. Slowly lift your arms outward — that motion triggers the text reveal. Keep it smooth and deliberate.

02Phase 2 · Layering & Masking

This creates the "sandwich" effect — text sits behind you but in front of the sky.

Import & Duplicate

Start a new project and import your clip. Tap Duplicate → Overlay, then drag the overlay clip beneath the original.

Remove the Sky

Select the Overlay (bottom) clip. Go to Remove BG → Custom Removal. Use Chroma Key — pick the sky color, raise the intensity until the sky disappears.

Chroma Key Settings

Use the Color Picker to grab the sky. Increase Intensity until it's gone. Add a touch of Feather edge for a natural cutout.

03Phase 3 · Adding the Text

The magic step — the layer sandwich that sells the illusion.

Add & Format Text

Tap Add Text and type your location name. Choose a bold font — Montserrat or Archive both look great.

Layer Sandwich — The Magic Step

With the text selected, tap Layers (circled in red in the tutorial). Drag the Text layer between Background and Overlay. The text should appear behind your body, in front of the sky.

Arrange Layers Panel

Tap Layers → Arrange layers. You'll see Overlay and Text tiles. Move Text to sit between the two video layers.

04Phase 4 · Animation & Keyframes

Use Keyframes to make the text rise in sync with your arm movement.

1. Starting Keyframe

Move the playhead to where your arms start to lift. Tap the diamond (◆) icon on the text layer to add a Keyframe. Drag the text down until it's hidden behind your shoulders.

2. Ending Keyframe

Move the playhead to where arms are fully extended. Add another Keyframe. Drag the text up to its final sky position.

3. Refinement

Adjust timing so text speed matches your arm movement. Smoother = more cinematic.

Pro Tips

Make it look real.

01

Feathering

Apply a tiny bit of "Feather edge" inside Chroma Key to make your cutout edges look natural. Without it, the silhouette looks pasted on. With it, it disappears into the scene.

02

Color Grade

Apply a filter to the whole project after finishing — this blends all the layers seamlessly and ties the sky, text, and silhouette into one cohesive image.

03

Sound

Add a "Whoosh" sound effect timed to peak when the text reaches its highest point. The audio sells the 3D motion as much as the visuals do.
